Identify as open during Open Access Week, Oct. 22-28

Open Access Week Logo w/ dates.

The NCSU Libraries celebrates Open Access Week—an international celebration of open practices that advocates for free access to scholarly outputs—October 22-28.

This year’s Open Access Week theme, “Designing Equitable Foundations for Open Knowledge” prompts ongoing conversations toward a more equitable system of open research and scholarship through collaboration and careful consideration of others. See the bottom of this release for a full schedule of NCSU Libraries Open Access Week events.

The Libraries will host popup events to help you “identify as open” by signing up for an Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID)—a unique, 16-digit, digital identifier that connects you to your research output and, through integration into key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated links between you and your professional activities to ensure that your work is recognized. Come to the Hunt Library lobby on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 2:00 p.m. and the D. H. Hill Jr. lobby on Friday, Oct. 26 at 11:30 a.m.

The Libraries will also host a screening of Open Source Stories: Science of Collective Discovery on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the Fishbowl Forum in the D. H. Hill Jr. Library. This film, featuring narration by Forestry & Environmental Resources associate professor Caren Cooper, highlights how open source hardware and citizen science intersect to empower people to monitor, understand, and protect environmental health. Following the film, a panel of students, faculty, and community members will lead a discussion about open source hardware, citizen science, and protecting environmental health.

Finally, both the D. H. Hill Jr. and Hunt Libraries will host whiteboard trivia contests to test your knowledge of Libraries collections. How much do you think we spend on access to knowledge every year? What journal is the most expensive? Come join us for candy and swag!
